Over the last twenty years, Helen has accumulated a large archive of material and original interviews about Anglo-Jewish history, with a particular specialism in the Jews of Devon. Outside London, Devon has the two oldest synagogues in the country – namely, Plymouth and Exeter – with a rich heritage that stretches back to the 1720s. Exeter had a Medieval Jewish community prior to its Expulsion in 1290. Helen has a large photographic archive of synagogues and Jewish cemeteries of Devon, Wales, Scotland, Leeds, London and some of the provinces. Some of her photographs have been deposited in digital format with the Jewish Museum, London. Thus far, she has written the following books which have their own individual web pages within this site: Jews in North Devon in WW2 which was awarded Devon Book of the Year, The Jews of Exeter: A Fully Illustrated History, Jewish Cemeteries of Devon, and The Jews of Plymouth (2015).
During 2014, Helen is working as a Consultant historian for the Golders Green Synagogue, conducting primary research and interviews to prepare material for its centenary exhibition in June 2015. She is happy to liaise with other Jewish communities in the future to discuss historical and archival consultancy work for them.
